Trudy Kauffman and the Art of Paper Cutting

In 1978 Trudy Kauffman started designing original paper cuttings, called Scherenschnitte by the Pennsylvania Dutch. These cuttings are based on the Swiss German technique of cutting one piece of paper in a continuous design. The first cuttings were inspired by the works of the Pennsylvania Germans from the eighteen hundreds.

Currently her selections have expanded to original cuts inspired by nature using a combination of papers. She compliments some of her cuttings with gouache paint. Calligraphy adds another dimension to the designs. At present she works out of her studio in Reading, PA.

Trudy is a juried member of The Reading Berks Guild of Craftsmen, The Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen and a founding member of the Guild of American Paper Cutters. She is also a member of Studio B in Boyertown and the Berks Art Alliance.

Trudy sells her work at the Goggle Works in Reading,PA, the Historic Society of Berks County, and the Landis Valley Farm Museum in Lancaster. She also sells through her website http://trudykauffman.papercutters.info and on Brothers Handmade at store.brothers-handmade.com.

Paper cutting is important part of Trudy’s life, She wishes everyone could have the joy she receives from creating her own

designs for herself and others.
