Artist Statement Sunny Finley
This body of work reclaims lace, doilies, stitching, and floral ornament—materials historically tied to women’s domestic labor—and places them in conversation with ceramic form. Once confined to quiet spaces such as tabletops, sideboards, and family interiors, these patterns are reimagined as objects of presence, scale, and permanence.
Through clay, I transform softness into structure and fragility into endurance. Stitched seams, floral surfaces, and aged textures speak to memory, inheritance, and the passage of time. Some works suggest preservation, while others acknowledge decay and impermanence.
Together, these pieces honor the beauty, labor, and quiet strength embedded in traditional feminine craft, inviting viewers to reconsider what has long been dismissed as decoration and recognize it as art.
