Ed McCarty

A retired native of Montgomery County, I am a self-taught artist with a fair amount of high school art training that I called upon throughout my career as a technical writer and illustrator. I only started drawing and painting, in earnest, when I retired in 2005. I have been fortunate enough to know Dave Larson. I have always admired his work and he has been very encouraging and an inspiration.

I try to maintain a realistic style even with my somewhat impressionistic works. Some of my pieces are composites of ideas; however, most of my city, town, harbor and landscape scenes are inspired by a genuine appreciation of their historic or natural beauty. My portfolio includes stills and an occasional portrait, but I always prefer the outdoor themes. I work primarily in pen and ink and more recently in watercolor. My pen and inks range from traditional line and stipple work to color ink washes’ pen applied. My watercolor work is a more recent fascination and an opportunity to expand my color expression.

I have shown my work locally since retiring and enjoy being scrutinized by other artist. The peer critiquing of my work drives me and keeps my work current. The other half of the show attraction is that I get to see some truly spectacular work by so many local artists and with every show I am amazed at the quality and spectrum of their work.

Additionally I have completed several commission pieces for various clients. I find commission work presents its own challenges and is equally conducive to growth.

I hope you enjoy my work as much as I have enjoyed doing it.
